Eave Protection:
The components that make up the foundation of a roof system, along the eave edges, at the soffit or overhang.

Item #1: Metal Drip Edge does three things * deflects water into the gutter system, rather than letting water run out between the gutter and fascia * supports the first row of asphalt shingles * eliminates rodents from chewing access holes to the attic space

Item #2: Eave Underlayment is required by the Building Code which states that this protection extend to a point, not less than 11" on the interior side of any exterior wall. This item acts as protection when climatic and thermal conditions contribute to ice damming. The Building Code allows three products or methods to accomplish this:

  • a double layer of #15 Felt [Tarpaper], cemented together
  • #25 Base Sheet [Fibreglass Base Sheet] > this looks like tarpaper, but is heavier and has fibreglass reinforcement
  • Ice & Water Membrane [adhesive-backed rubber]
Note #1: To interpret the Building Code correctly and because the products are manufactured in 3' wide rolls, anytime the soffit or overhang is greater than 12", it is imperative that a double-width [6'], be installed. Otherwise, all warranties are void, due to the fact that the roof system does not meet the minimum standards of the Building Code.

Note #2: Because the process of cementing 2-layers of tarpaper together is too time consuming, the standard method used by professional roofing contractors is the Fibreglass Base Sheet. The deluxe, optional product is Ice & Water Shield. However, it is also, much more expensive.

WARNING!
Several roofing companies state they are installing Ice & Water Shield, when in fact, they only install a single layer of #15 Felt. They call Eave Protection, Ice & Water Shield. Do you go Snowmobiling or SkiDooing?
